World Lore
War is a near constant presence for the old lands of the Elven Empire, now divided into the many kingdoms of the Triumvirate. When peace comes, many war-trained soldiers choose not to return to their lives as farmers or miners. These soldiers form mercenary groups, working for kingdoms, lords, merchants, and guilds. Mercenaries range from private armies to small gangs shaking down debtors for local lenders.
The archfae who claim the moon are known as the 3 Sisters, sometimes 4. They go by many names: the Maiden, the Waxing Moon, the Full Moon, and the Unborn Moon. While all have followers, the Full Moon is the most revered, shining brightly and drawing worship from both mortals and fae alike.
The Known and Conquered World was once ruled by the Great Elven Empire, which included most of the continent and surrounding islands. The empire rose and fell multiple times, losing support from the various elven factions like the autumn and summer elves. Eventually, the Triumvirate, formed by human, dwarf, and buak kingdoms, overthrew them. Despite the collapse of the empire, elven culture remains prevalent in many areas, though they no longer hold positions of leadership or military rank.
The universe consists of the base plane, surrounded by elemental planes and solar planes. The Faelands of light and shadow orbit the base plane, and there are elemental planes for air, water, fire, earth, and possibly aether. The solar planes represent divine pantheons and fiendish circles, where gods and devils once warred but have since agreed to stay in their own realms, influencing the base plane through their mortal worshipers.
The fiends constantly try to find loopholes in the immortal treaty, pushing through thin barriers between realms during unholy nights. Though only the weaker fiends manage to slip through, they always look for ways to break the rules.
Angels who reside on the base plane have severed formal ties with their pantheons to avoid violating the immortal treaty. Despite this, many still act as agents for specific gods or pantheons, sacrificing their divine rights in service of heaven.
The Faelands are lands of magic where every object, from trees to stones, has a sense of will. Fae beings wield immense power and often change their names to reflect their ever-evolving nature. Some fae with many titles demonstrate their prowess, while others choose to be known by a single, powerful name.
Dragons and True Giants are the most legendary beings on the base plane, descended from the mounts and servants of the Creators. They are imbued with immense magical power and are often the subjects of great myths and stories.
Lycanthropes are beings cursed or gifted by the fae. They gain heightened senses, physical strength, and resistances. However, they are forced to transform into hulking beasts during certain phases of the moon.
The Unmortal City is a mysterious place, home to those who have somehow defied death. This city is said to exist at the crossroads of several planes, and its inhabitants are neither truly alive nor dead.
